Vintage Children's Book.....

Front Cover

SURPRISE FOR SUSAN, 1950...BY KATHRYN HITTE  PICTURES BY PELAGIE DOANE
I found this at the Trading Post in town recently....wanted to share it with you all. You are more than welcome to save the pictures I scanned. There were more, but for now I am offering these. It's such a sweet old book, and a cute story. Grandma, grandpa, and daddy try and get Susan to guess the surprise mommy is bringing home for her.

Susan,thinking it over :)

In the end she finds out the surprise is a new baby brother! Such things are not kept a secret any longer, not as they once were. My mama says she was always told,as a little girl, the doctor brought the baby to their home in his bag :) She said she didn't know the difference until she was about 12. Just think what a 12 year old may know this day in time, its so sad to me! I long for the innocence of childhood as it once was...I am an old soul indeed! I long for so many of the old ways...I still believe it was a better time in our world.

This was on the inside of the back cover...precious isn't it?

Blessings

We are kindred spirits Shelley . . . I love vintage children's books and stories. The illustrations are always so sweet, and the stories are always more innocent and pure than children's books written today. A lovely find . . .
Blessings,
Kim

That is so beautiful! Yes it does remind me of sweeter, gentler days when innocence was cherished and not taken away.

Beautiful blog too. Thank you for sharing. I will definitely be following you.

Blessings!

My late and favorite neighbor was born in 1911. She was the oldest of 11 children. Her youngest sibling was born when she was 26. She said that when she was a little girl, she didn't know that a baby was coming. There would be one when she came back from her grandma's house. I had asked her if her mother lost any children at birth. She couldn't say, because it just wasn't talked about. I suppose that even meant as adults they didn't ask Mother about it. Tonight, one of my Bible class girls (6th grade) wanted us to pray for her teacher who just found out she was pregnant. Times have changed!

I love your book, Shelley. Precious!

so sweet and precious...I love the illustrations and thought behind it. A wonderful time to grow up, being born in 1951, these pictures look so familiar and comforting to me. Great find...

Hello my DEAR Friend!!
I was without internet for months and I missed being able to leave comments, and I am so happy to be here now!!
I am listening to your wonderful music right now and it is really lifting me today because I have been so down today because I have a sick little Doggie that doesn't seem to be going to make it and I have been grieving for her today.
(Thank you for always posting great music and words)!
Sending you Blessings and Love, your friend Linnie
