Simple living Shelley.... Still.......

Took a little walk around the grounds today with my walker and a big dishpan. Went to gather some things to make up a pan full of natural potpourri from my woods and there about. Thought I might offer some at our upcoming church Christmas Bazaar.

Getting started.

Lots of woodsy goodness in there :)

Now,I will bring it inside, add more as I go,and then let it cure for a couple of weeks before the Bazaar. It's already smelling wonderful to me.

You know,I was thinking about myself today....really I haven't changed much from whom I have always been. The things I have always held most dear to me,God,family,friends,church...those are still the things closest to my heart today. I still find pleasure in the most simple things...always have. It is nothing new for me to gather from my yard something to decorate my home with....a present for a loved one...could be something I created from things I already had on hand,or maybe a poem for my heart. I remember as a small girl making dolls from old socks,or toothpicks(body) and acorns(heads). Ever done that?

See this picture below.....this was around 1988 or close there by. The centerpiece on the coffee table are things I gathered from our then woods....cedar,pine,pine cones,Autumn leaves, etc. That was our family Thanksgiving day! We lived in the country,no phone,no hot water heater,no gas,no washer,no dryer.
We heated our home with a wood stove, heated our bath water on that same stove...I washed our laundry by hand or went to the laundry mat. My kiddos ran up and down our little lazy country road and rode tall skinny pine trees up and down for fun. They played in the creek, played house and made forts....my girls wore dresses,no pants and were very modest. We went to church three times a week, and never begrudge it. We loved it...it was the center part of our lives. We had bible study in the mornings and said our prayers each night...along with bedtime stories.
I love how I raised my children...not everything was wonderful, nor perfect, but life was basically good for us.
I have so much to thank God for.......now,and then!

Blessings,Shelley

What a neat idea for your church bazaar. I would love something like that! Nothing better than the simple things nature has to offer. Sounds like you did a wonderful job of raising your family, what a great accomplishment!

Good morning!

I have the same gnome! Perhaps I had two or you had two at one time and we shared!

Now this potpourri that you have gathered. Is it just the natural scent or do you add a oil to it Shelley? That is such a simply lovely thing to gathered. I am with Twyla, is their a recipe or do you just add a scented oil?

As you may know by now Kara, Jared and Darrin's grandma Dorothy died last night. She asked the Lord to go about three weeks ago. My dad did too on the day of his passing...the Lord hears our prayers and in his perfect timing he takes us home. Kara is okay and Jared is doing pretty good but my Darrin is really hurting. He was on the phone last night to me in anger, trying to cope with it all. Please keep him in your prayers. Love to you.

I'm getting ready for a one day craft sale at a church on Dec. 1st so I'm hunkered down in the happy room as happy as can be!

The beauty of God's creation gathered in a dish pan! I remember making acorn dolls with toothpicks. What simple times those seemed to be. That's a sweet family photo, you have been truly blessed!

Your memories of the 80s sort of mirror mine. I wasn't as much of a homesteader as you were, but our ideals were the same. My little girls, though younger than yours, also wore dresses, but not always. Homeschoolers then thought differently than they do today, it seems like. Your description reminds me of how all homeschoolers that I knew lived or at least *wanted* to live. Happy memories. Old people back then told me then these happy years would soon be gone, and they were right.

You have a younger son not pictured in your '88 picture, don't you? I also have a daughter not pictured with our older two. She was 13 years after the younger of our "big girls".
